Ocean Sciences Tanks Strengthening For New Openings

OVERVIEW

The Ocean Sciences’ tanks are located at the Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The consulting engineers required the existing fiber-reinforced polymer tanks to have new openings cut through the existing tank walls.

Back in September 2006, the decision was made to cut into the existing FRP tanks to accommodate new manways for maintenance access.

Fibrwrap Installations reinforced the bottom six-feet of the two tanks with 4 layers of Tyfo SEH-51A System. An additional two-layers (16-inches wide), was then applied around the openings extending 12-inches beyond the opening edges.
